Mary was nominated by Anthony Markovitch as an unsung hero of the Northside.
“There is one particular person who stands out to me as a stalwart member of this community and the personification of the Northside ideal. For 35 years she has been investing her time, love, and whatever else of value she could provide to Madison’s Northside. She has also given her faith, solidly committed to the ideals of its early vision. Mary has always taken an active role, bringing science experiments and literacy tutoring to Mendota and Black Hawk. Most of all, she has poured hundreds of hours into Troy Gardens, shaping them since the very first plot was dug and building and stocking the garden library herself, even earning status as a Master Gardener to offer free assistance to fellow Northsiders caring for plants and trees to beautify our neighborhoods.”
