MarketReady Administrative Assistant

The Northside Planning Council is hiring an administrative assistant to provide administrative support for Madison Public Market’s MarketReady Program. The assistant will join a dynamic team working to increase access to entrepreneurship through this Northside Planning Council program.

Position Details

  • 15-20 hours/week, with the possibility of transitioning to a full-time position by the end of the year
  • Reports to MarketReady Coordinator
  • $15-16/hour based on experience


The Northside Planning Council (NPC) is a community-based nonprofit serving Madison’s Northside for the past 25 years. NPC owns and operates several high profile enterprises, including FEED Kitchens, the Northside News, the FEED Bakery Training Program, Healthy Food For All, the Madison Public Market’s MarketReady Program (MarketReady) and the Stable Families, Strong Community initiative. NPC is also actively engaged in various neighborhood organizing and economic development initiatives.

MarketReady is a small business development program connected to the soon-to-be-built Madison Public Market. This will be a space for selling locally-produced food, crafts, and other goods. MarketReady is funded by the City of Madison and run by the Northside Planning Council. MarketReady supports new or expanding small businesses owned by immigrants, women, non-English speakers, people of color, and people coming from other groups that experience structural barriers to starting or running a business. There are 30 businesses participating in the program.


  • Collect, enter and synthesize data (numbers and stories) related to the business development progress of MarketReady participants.
  • Maintain email distribution lists, social media accounts and other communication tools.
  • Provide administrative support for meetings and workshops: assist with scheduling meetings, send reminders, track RSVPs and take minutes.
  • Develop and maintain data collection and tracking tools such as surveys and spreadsheets.
  • Work with participants, coaches and partners to manage reimbursable expenses, including incoming request checks, collecting appropriate documentation and communicating with relevant parties about these tasks.
  • Support coordinator with research, coordination, scheduling and registration of educational programming opportunities to fulfill specific requests from participants.

  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Comfort and experience working with culturally, economically and linguistically diverse communities
  • Exceptional oral and written communication abilities
  • Strong technical skills, including the following software/technologies:
    • Knowledge of or comfort learning Quickbooks
    • Familiarity with Google Suite: Gmail, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Forms, etc.
    • Strong abilities to build and maintain a spreadsheet that can store, organize, and analyze data
  • A computer-based test will be included with the interview process to assess proficiency in these areas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in small business development, food systems, community development, and/or community organizing
  • Enough Spanish speaking and writing abilities to be able to communicate with participants over the phone, text, and email in Spanish
  • Experience and comfort with digital storytelling: video, pictures, podcasts and social media
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, Basecamp, Slack, Salesforce, WordPress, 1Password, Facebook, Instagram, MailChimp, Nextdoor and SurveyMonkey will be taken into consideration.
