Northside Neighborhood Plan enters next phase

The next phase of the City of Madison's Northside Neighbor- hood Plan is underway. Officially known as the Northport-Warner Park-Sherman Neighborhood Plan, the City Planning Division is working with the residents and business owners appointed to the plan Steering Committee to develop an update to the original Northside plan, adopted in 1992. The plan update will be used by city policymakers when decisions relating to community services, land use, redevelopment, circulation improvements and numerous other relevant issues are addressed in the next five-10 years.

Plan expanded to cover more of Northside
As a result of discussions with Northside residents serving on the Steering Committee, and with the support of Alders Satya Rhodes-Conway and Michael Schumacher and the Northside Planning Council, the City of Madison has expanded the plan boundaries to include all of the plan-eligible neighborhoods on the Northside as one unified planning area, rather than doing two separate plans. “Joining the two phases of the project to allow for a single, unified plan was very important,” said Jeff Shokler, Northside Planning Council vice-chair. “We're looking forward to building upon the Northside unity developed over the past 15 years to devise strategies that address the entire community's priority issues.”

Lakeview Library celebrates generous donation
Former Northside gives $86,000 to local branch

The Lakeview Branch Library is celebrating a generous gift of $86,000 recently received from the estate of Barbara D. Oreel, a longtime Northside resident who passed away in 2006.

Katie Scharf, Lakeview Branch Librarian, said that the unexpected donation was a “big surprise” and “is greatly appreciated as it will be a tremendous help in improving the library services and collections for the Northside community.”

Zoning code rewrite work continues
Can I have chickens? What if I live in duplex? Can we start a co-op? Can I build a granny apartment over my garage?

The City of Madison Zoning Code Rewrite process is finishing up the initial work on the analysis and issue-identification phase of the project.

The new zoning code will have an effect on how the city continues to grow and how land (including many parcels on the Northside) will be redeveloped.
